Can you earn a gift? (Rom.4:4). If you could earn something, you would have something to boast about. God didn’t give the gift because we earned it, it doesn’t make sense. Think about it. It would be unfair if by someone’s “work” they earned something “new” from God.
“Did you receive the Spirit by your own effort (works of the law), or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit (which has made us perfect and whole – Heb.10:14, 1Cor.3:17), why are you now trying to become perfect by your own effort?” (Gal.3:2-3).
Jesus didn’t come to try to be holy. He already was because He had the Holy Spirit in Him, which He gave to us by going to the Father. He said it Himself, “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world” (Jn.17:18). Jesus made Himself of no reputation, and took the form of a bondservant. Why? Because He lowered Himself that He might serve man. He truly loved one another. And He sent us to do the same, as He did, and greater. How do we do it? Spend our lives to try to be more like Him? Or believe that we are already like Him, and love one another as He loved us?
If He gave us a command, wouldn’t He also equip us with everything we needed to obey that command? That’s what He did. He gave us what He had – His Spirit.
